About Me: I love country music! I am the Music Director at K102 in addition to doing my overnight show. I have the opportunity to hear tons of new country music and see new artists perform before anyone else. It's a really cool opportunity which I never take for granted. What's hard is hearing great new music and having to wait to play it on the radio!
Music: Songs: Currently I am obsessed with the song "Life In A Northern Town" - the live version we are playing featuring Sugarland, Little Big Town and Jake Owen. Artists: Lori McKenna, The Lost Trailers, Emily West, Crystal Shawanda, Mica Roberts, Chuck Wicks, James Otto, Lady Antebellum, Fisher Stevenson, Luke Bryan, Bucky Covington, Whiskey Falls and Kellie Pickler, Little Big Town, Brad Paisley, Trisha Yearwood, Wynonna, Sugarland, Miranda Lambert, Carrie Underwood, Clint Black, Blake Shelton, Big & Rich, Pat Green, Kenny Chesney, Tim McGraw, Faith Hill, Alan Jackson, LeAnn Rimes, Sara Evans, George Strait, Glen Campbell, Loretta Lynn, Johnny Cash, June Carter Cash, The Judds, Dolly Parton, Merle Haggard, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Eddie Rabbitt, Kenny Rogers, and I'm out of room.
Movies: I have a short attention span, so it is difficult for me to sit and watch movies. I tend to get up and do other things while I'm "watching a movie". I have started renting the series "Weeds" and am slowly watching that show. It's more my pace to be able to watch a 25 minute episode and then take breaks.
TV: I watch a lot of public television and the History channel. Yes, I'm a big nerd. I also watch LOST, Ghost Whisperer, Ghost Hunters, Most Haunted (hilarious, European and badly produced, but somehow I catch it every Friday night!)
Books: Currently reading: "The Happiness Myth - Why What We Thing Is Right Is Wrong" by Jennifer Michael Hecht
Likes: Honesty, Sincerity, people who are "real". People who get it.
Dislikes: Mean people, liars, mosquitos and getting lost.
Hobbies: Writing, reading, gardening, grilling, watching sports.
    Vices: NOYB
    Heroes: My Grandmother, Grace.

    Cleaning this weekend!

    Friday, September 5, 2008, 09:21 AM [General]

This is the perfect weather to clean the house!  I started working on it last weekend and now this weekend I'm hauling old stuff/clothes over to Savers.  I love getting rid of things that we no longer use.  It's going to be so awesome to get rid of some of the clutter!!  It may sound strange to be excited about cleaning (which I generally dislike) but I guess I'm just in the mood to get 'er done!   PS - if anyone knows how I would go about getting rid of (a lot) of old pieces of wood that are in my basement, drop me an email.   Mary

Music Review: Shawanda shows power on debut

BYLINE: By MICHAEL McCALL, For The Associated Press

Crystal Shawanda, "Dawn Of A New Day" (RCA Nashville)

A Native American raised on a reservation in Ontario, Canada, Crystal Shawanda owns an amped-up voice and a professed love for old-school country, shouting out to Patsy Cline in her lyrics and covering the Hank Williams' classic "Your Cheatin' Heart."

But the rest of "Dawn Of A New Day," the 27-year-old's debut album, rocks as aggressively as any contemporary country album of 2008. Her bluesy, in-your-face style crosses the vocal pyrotechnics of Carrie Underwood with the uncompromising soul power of Mary J. Blige. This is country music flexed and fueled to connect with those who listen to modern rock and Alicia Keys-style urban pop.

Lyrically, Shawanda focuses on autobiographical tunes describing where she comes from ("Evolution"), where she's going (the title cut) and what a man should realize about her ("My Roots Are Showing"). She falters when she stifles her individuality for generic Nashville sentimentality, as in the ballad "You Can Let Go." She's much better when slow songs include a sweet- soul sway, as in "Tender Side."

Fortunately, most of "Dawn Of A New Day" suggests Nashville has discovered another strong female vocalist capable of establishing her own point of view.

CHECK THIS OUT: "I Need A Man," set to Midwestern roots-rock guitar crunch, shows an unfettered lustfulness that other female country singers don't dare reveal.

What are you doing with a new puppy? I can't believe you didn't tell me! Are you crazy? Now you have 2 cats, 2 dogs....OY.
Okay, I'm jealous that you have a dog and I don't. And that Now you will never be able to
leave the house and hang out with me. This is probably the reason you haven't told me. Because you knew I'd freak out.
